“…one of the founders and biggest stars of Bulgaria’s wildly popular ‘wedding music’ scene…a saxophone player of astounding technical virtuosity.” – Dirty Linen

Texas Performing Arts presents an evening with Bulgaria’s greatest saxophone player and pioneer of the country’s ‘wedding music’ scene. The Yuri Yunakov Ensemble will perform one dynamic show on Friday, January 29 at Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

From the intensely personal sound of a Gypsy sax solo, to the dizzying polyrhythmic beat of Bulgarian wedding music, the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble is one of the leading acts on the world music scene. This tradition-bending music includes willful nods to bebop and cartoon music, with frenetic time signatures and live-wire improvisations played out as show-stopping duels between Yunakov and his ensemble, creating harmonies which have made him a legend in Bulgaria since the 1970s. A member of the famed Gypsy Caravan Tour, the ensemble has performed at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian Institute and throughout the United States and abroad.
