Four-time Grammy Award-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw makes her Texas Performing Arts debut, Sunday, January 22 at Bates Recital Hall. Upshaw is a worldwide celebrity on both opera and concert stages, with a diverse repertoire that ranges from classic works of Bach to the freshest sounds of today. She reaches into the heart of music and text, drawing the devotion of an exceptionally diverse audience and a list of awards and distinctions bestowed on only the most distinguished of artists.

Upshaw is admired for her rare musicality and distinctive vocal beauty. She is an accomplished recitalist, a recording soloist, and is featured on more than 50 recordings, including the million-selling Symphony No. 3 by Henryk Gorecki.

Upshaw holds honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, the Manhattan School of Music, Allegheny College, and Illinois Wesleyan University. She is Artistic Director of the Vocal Arts Program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music and a faculty member of the Tanglewood Music Center. Upshaw was also a winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions and the Walter M. Naumburg Competition.

Pianist Stephen Prutsman will accompany Upshaw. Recently appointed Artistic Director of the Cartagena International Music Festival, South America’s largest festival of its kind, Prutsman moves easily from classical to jazz to world music as pianist, composer, conductor, and curator. From 2004-2007 Stephen was Artistic Partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra where he led concertos from the keyboard, conducted works of living composers, arranged music for world music collaborations, and composed several new works for the orchestra. Stephen has written and arranged over 40 works for the Kronos Quartet in addition to having written for many world’s leading classical and popular artists and ensembles.
