“The fabled Haynes touch…a highly flammable mixture of charisma and skill… that ignites during each of his drum breaks to bring jazz to a boil.” —DOWNBEAT

Legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes and his Fountain of Youth Band currently rank among one of the most prominent and talented jazz quartets in the country. Texas Performing Arts proudly welcomes this Grammy-nominated force to Bass Concert Hall on Friday, March 30.

Drumming since the early years of his life, Haynes made his professional debut at the age of seventeen. In the years that followed, he became known for his idiosyncratic style created by unique drum and cymbal patterns and is now frequently referred to as the pulse of legendary jazz. By 1945 Haynes began a full-time professional career and started collaborating with some of the most prominent names in jazz today, most notably playing as a member of Charlie Parker’s quintet from 1949 until 1952. Other collaborations include performances or recordings with jazz icons Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. For his astounding musical contributions to the art of jazz drumming, Haynes was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in December of 2010.

The Fountain of Youth Band also boasts the talents of saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, bassist David Wong, and pianist Martin Bejerano. Each player is known for their virtuosity on their instrument and their aptitude for improvisational solos. The band will perform works off of their albums Whereas and the self-titled Fountain of Youth.
